Spring Break 2014: Sanibel Island

Our Spring Break felt a bit lackluster, which I know was mostly due to my high expectations of sunny weather, great shelling, and a bit of relaxation.  I seem to always forget that 'vacation' albeit with the family in toe is just not that relaxing.  It's just not.  By the time we got the kids to bed, we had no energy left for conversation or a drink.  We just went to bed too, which is a bit depressing.  We had a beautiful lanai, a great beach steps away, but just couldn't do it.  We also had a very cold week of weather with just a few days of sun.  To top it off, we had a seven (yes, seven) hour delay at the Ft. Myers airport for our trip home.  Sean put it perfectly, "that was the most pleasant unpleasant experience I think I've ever had."  I couldn't agree more.  We all took that delay in stride, armed with much media devices of course.  But the kids did play with other kids, we met 'airport friends' and snuck in a few moments of reading. We all stayed irritation-free.

So, despite my expectations going into the trip (which does not bode well by the way), I have a few very fond memories.  Most of the best times were in snapshot moments.  Here's a few:

1.  Shelling with Sophia at sunrise.  Finding little treasures together, identifying them together and sighting dolphins out in the calm water.

2.  Taking Avery back to the lighthouse as I promised after sundown.  We got out of the car, went to the beach and watched the lighthouse 'go on and off' as we also looked up at the big starry sky around us.  It was a quiet and perfect moment.

3.  Despite the boat ride being ungodly cold and windy, we all huddled together, everyone on the boat looking out for one another.

4.   I spotted a huge Lightning Whelk on North Captiva by the dock.  We picked it up, it must have weighed 8 or so pounds, and may have been close to 15 years old.  We were happy to spot it and then put it back.

5.  Shelling before daybreak by myself with a flashlight.  A little scary, since I didn't know the terrain so well, but it was calm and I came away with 9 fighting conches and a few more beauties.

6.  Eating some fabulous and fresh seafood!
